Swimming Rules

The swimming competition will be conducted under the rules set down by FINA except where modified below;

​

Event

For each category in the program, the competition will consist of:

  • Men’s individual event.

  • Women’s individual event.

For the relays, the competition will consist of:

  • An open team’s event.

Shield Points

The total Shield Points available will be based on the formula contained in the General Rules. The points allocated to each event will be distributed evenly.

​

Format

The swimming program will be run as a timed finals event. Heats will be conducted in the following order. Heats will be seeded where numbers allow.

  • 200 meter freestyle (scratch only)

  • 50 meter butterfly (scratch only)

  • 100 meter freestyle (scratch only)

  • 50 meter breaststroke (scratch only)

  • 50 meter freestyle (handicap only)

  • 4 x 50 meter medley relay (handicap only)

  • 50 meter backstroke (scratch only)

  • 50 meter freestyle (scratch only)

  • 4 x 50 meter freestyle relay (handicap only)

An individual swimmer may compete in a maximum of 3 individual events. Relay teams should be mixed gender, with a minimum of one female. Relay teams will consist of four swimmers.

Scratch races

For all the individual scratch races, points will be awarded to the four fastest male swimmers and the four fastest female swimmers:

  • 6 points for the fastest, 4 points for the second fastest, 2 points for the third fastest, 1 point for the fourth fastest

For the relay races points will be awarded to the four fastest teams

  • 24 points for the fastest, 16 points for the second fastest, 8 points for the third fastest, 4 points for the fourth fastest.

Handicap races

Swimmers will be required to estimate their time for the handicap races, and will accrue points depending on how close their actual time is to their nominated time. The estimate for the team will be the accumulated estimate of all team members.

For the individual handicap races, points will be awarded as follows:

  • 6 points within one second, 4 points within two seconds, 2 points within three seconds, 1 points within four seconds

For the team handicap races, points will be awarded as follows:

  • 24 points within three seconds, 16 points within six seconds, 8 points within nine seconds, 4 points within twelve seconds, 2 points within sixteen seconds.

In the event of a tie, positions will be determined by the times in the 50m freestyle.

Champion male

The champion male will be the male swimmer gaining most points after all scratch and handicap races are contested.

​

Champion female

The champion female will be the female swimmer gaining most points after all scratch and handicap races are contested.

​

Champion team

The champion team will be the team that accumulates the highest number of points from all events by team members. In the event of a tie, positions will be determined by the times in the

4 x 50 metre freestyle relay.

​

Rule Modification

  • Swimmers can start in the water if they choose.

  • Equipment Requirements

  • Swimmers should bring goggles​
